The city walls form a 5 km long green belt around the centre.
The walls refer to the original fortification wall, the second city wall from the first half of the 15th century. From about 1850, the defensive belt was gradually demolished and replaced with greenery. The walls are home to a large number of precious trees including green and red beech, Japanese pagoda trees, oak, lime and plane trees.
Walkers, joggers and cyclists enjoy this piece of nature in the city, all year round.
Along the way you will see quite a lot of statues.
The signposted city walk Timmermanspad runs across a large part of the city walls.
