Lier lace is unique in the world of lace, as it is not bobbin lace, but hand-embroidered on machine woven tulle. Using a small crochet, chain stitches in various thicknesses of cotton are embroidered on tulle, which is stretched onto an embroidery frame. This creates shadow effects.
Besides Lier lace, the town was also world renowned for pearl embroidery. Pearls and sequins are embroidered onto tulle using chain stitches, creating luxurious handbags and evening gowns.
