The historic Lier Giants float is one of the oldest in Belgium. Since the 15th century, they have been walking in processions and parades. The giants only make an appearance on exceptional occasions and very rarely leave Lier. Felix Timmermans called them "the cardboard bodyguards of the great festivities'.
The family of giants consists of Goliath (1469), the Reuzin (1482), the Kamenierster (1604), Kinnebaba (1604), Janneke broer and Mieke zuster (1856), Grotemoe and Groteva (1856) and two Moorish servants (1865).
In the traditional Ommegang, the giant float is completed by three mythical creatures, three other floats and around twenty hobby horses.
There are also many giants, from the city or from associations: Grimmara, Gummarus, Pallieter and Marieke with their triplets, Wardje, Cor de Kluts, Johan den Bakker, sister Agnes and the Caje.
The Gezellen van 't Groot Volk is responsible for preserving and managing Lier's giant heritage, which is part of Flanders' intangible cultural heritage.
The interactive and participative Stadsmuseum presents the stories of Lier and the people of Lier. Discover the different themes and activities, also for children.
