The modernist Sacred Heart Church (1937-1939) is a total work of art comprising architecture, stained glass windows and sculpture.
The design by architect and painter Flor Van Reeth, founding member of the Pilgrim Movement, shows a modern and progressive vision. The interior is sober and monumental, which gives a feeling of space. The stained-glass windows were designed and made by Jan Huet.
On the outside, the church is characterised by modern bricks, flat roofs and a tower on the west side. The enormous sculpture 'The Good Shepherd' by Karel Aubroeck also catches the eye.
In 1995, it was protected as a monument.
In 2011, the exterior was thoroughly renovated. Since 2022, the interior has also been restored. From then on, the Sacred Heart Church can be used for concerts, exhibitions, etc. in addition to the worship services.
The former baptistery has been converted into a museum space.
