In 1369, Hendrik Mijs built the slender gothic belfry next to the Cloth Hall, now the Town Hall.
The tower is a symbol of freedom and independence.
In the Middle Ages the town’s deeds and freedoms were kept in the belfries, and the alarm bell was housed there, which was rung in emergencies. The town's arsenal was also housed here.
Since 1971 the belfry tower has housed a small automatic carillon with 23 bells, which plays a tune every 15 minutes.
Together with 23 other belfries, the Lier belfry was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
