At 83 metres high, the St. Gummarus tower at St. Gummarus Church is an important landmark in the city. The church tower is popularly known as the 'pepper pot'.
Following various disasters, construction took almost 4 centuries, which is clearly visible in the different building styles: gothic, baroque and rococo.
Inside you will discover the 18th century carillon with a large bell weighing 7.5 tons, a unique playing drum and an ancient tower clock.
After climbing 296 steps you have a breathtaking view over Lier and surrounding area from the top.
This collegiate church with the adjoining St. Gummarus tower is one of the most striking buildings in the town centre. Construction of the church lasted about 2 centuries. Inside you can marvel at a whole host of art treasures.
From St. Gummarus tower, carillon music has been played since the 15th century. The current instrument is the heaviest 18th century carillon in Western Europe. Since 2014, Belgian carillon culture has been recognised as UNESCO World Heritage.
